‘SLC Punk!’ Director Sinks Fangs Into ‘Vampire Summer Camp’

James Merendino will direct the indie comedy from a script he co-wrote with Jenny Jaffe

"SLC Punk!" director James Merendino is attached to direct the indie comedy "Vampire Summer Camp," reports Variety.

Written by Merendino and Jenny Jaffe, the story centers on a musical-theater competition between two summer camps, one of which caters to young vampires.

The news is noteworthy because "SLC Punk!" is, quite frankly, one of the best independent films I've ever seen, featuring a career-best performance from star Matthew Lillard.

The movie had an energy and spirit that can't be easily faked, and to me, that's the sign of a truly talented filmmaker at work. I thought it would've led to higher-profile projects but regardless, it's good to see him returning behind the camera, armed with a strong premise that could pay dividends, provided the popularity of vampires doesn't wane in the next few years.

Rose Ganguzza ("Afterschool," "The Romantics") will produce with Frightening Entertainment, and the search is on for a composer for the film's original songs.

The project will feature a mid-seven figure budget, and production is expected to begin in November in New York.

Merendino is represented by UTA and The Collective.
