Sony Pictures will distribute the remake of "Evil Dead" — a deal the company made with FilmDistrict and Ghost House Pictures, the companies announced Wednesday.
The "Evil Dead" franchise, launched in 1981, and quickly became a cult hit. Sam Raimi wrote and directed all three films and is producing the remake — though the Uraguayan director Fede Alvarez is directing.
Sony will distribute the film worldwide except in the U.K. and France.
In addition to Raimi, two other key participants in the original series, Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell (left), are producing.
Raimi and Tapert are principals at Ghost House.

In the new movie, which Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues wrote, five friends find a strange book while staying at a remote cabin. The book unleashes a demonic force, which possesses each of the friends until only one is left.
