Sony Pictures Entertainment has named John Restall as executive VP of domestic marketing research, it was announced Monday by Dwight Caines, the studio’s president of theatrical marketing.

In his new role, Restall will report to Caines as he oversees all domestic theatrical market research efforts for the studio’s marketing department, helping to shape and manage the studio’s messaging for all films. Restall will collaborate closely with his international research counterparts, who report to Michael Horn, Sony’s president of international marketing.

Restall joins Sony from the research firm Nielsen NRG, where as senior VP of client consulting, he served as the lead account representative for several of the firm’s studio clients, overseeing the design, analysis and management of ad testing, tracking, screenings, positioning studies, brand studies, exit polls and focus groups. “John has deep understanding of market research, which, combined with his experience and position at NRG, have given him incredible insight into the best practices across the industry. That’s a huge win for our studio. He’s uniquely qualified and the best possible candidate to step in to oversee our domestic research group,” said Caines.
