Sorkin Will Make Directing Debut on ‘The Politician’

He also will adapt Andrew Young’s book about John Edwards for the screen

Aaron Sorkin has acquired "The Politician," Andrew Young's book about his career with former Sen. John Edwards, and will make it his directorial debut.

Sorkin, creator of "The West Wing" and screenplay writer for "The Social Network," also will write and produce "Politician."

Released earlier this year, "The Politician" starts with Young volunteering for Edwards’ Senate campaign in 1998. Young became one of Edwards’ most trusted confidants, to the point where Edwards asked Young to cover for him over the story of Edwards' own extramarital affair and the child that resulted from that relationship.

"This is a first-hand account of an extraordinary story filled with motivations, decisions and consequences that would have lit Shakespeare up. There's much more to Andrew's book than what has been reported and I'm grateful that he's trusting me with it," Sorkin said in a statement.

“The Social Network” will open the New York Film Festival and then be released Oct. 1 by Sony.

Sorkin also wrote the feature films “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “The American President” and, based on his play, “A Few Good Men.” He also created TV series “The West Wing” and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip."
