How ‘Southside With You’ Stars Drew Inspiration From the Obamas’ Relationship (Exclusive Video)

Tika Sumpter and Parker Sawyers talk to TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell about the power of “seeing two public figures … who actually are affectionate to each other”

Tika Sumpter and Parker Sawyers play a young Michelle and Barack Obama in the new movie “Southside With You,” and in a recent interview with TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell, the actors talked about how the first couple’s story sets an example for love birds everywhere.

“I think seeing two public figures in the forefront who actually are affectionate to each other — I don’t know, I think it does something to a lot of people,” Sumpter said. “I really think it helped a lot of relationships.”

“Southside With You” is a romantic dramedy that follows the beginning of Michelle and Barack Obama’s relationship, as a young Barack tries to win over the future first lady in Chicago in 1989.

The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and it marks the feature directorial debut of Richard Tanne.

Sawyers told TheWrap that he was touched by Michelle and Barack Obama’s support for each other and added that the ability to see where they are now in comparison to their “humble beginnings” can push individuals to chase after their own dreams.

“Whatever your goal is, whatever your dream is — it gives inspiration to that,” he said.

“Southside With You” will be released in theaters on Aug. 26.
