‘Spider-Man’ Musical’s Broadway Opening: Dec. 21

Julie Taymor’s “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” features music and lyrics by U2’s Bono and the Edge

"Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," the musical version of the comic book and movie sensation, is set to open on Broadway Dec. 21, lead producer Michael Cohl announced Tuesday. Previews will begin Nov. 14.

Cohl also said joining Reeve Carney as Peter Parker/Spider-Man are Tony nominee Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane and Patrick Page as Norman Osborn/the Green Goblin. Full company rehearsals are set to start Aug. 16.

The show features music and lyrics by U2's Bono and the Edge and is directed by Julie Taymor. New supervillains are promised by producers. The show is set for the Foxwoods Theater; tickets will go on sale in September.

The web-slinging superhero is getting renewed attention. The musical opens as Sony begins production on a new 3D movie version of "Spider-Man." Marc Webb is directing newcomer Andrew Garfield in the title role, with a release date set for July 3, 2012.
