‘Straight Outta Compton’ Ad Footage Shot on Day of Fatal Suge Knight Hit-and-Run (Video)

Teaser for film that traces the origins of N.W.A., the rap group that made Dr. Dre and Ice Cube famous, aired during Sunday’s Grammys

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for N.W.A. origin biopic “Straight Outta Compton,” featuring an introduction by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube that was shot on the day of the fatal hit-and-run crash involving music mogul Marion “Suge” Knight.

In the black and white intro to the film’s red band trailer, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube are seen driving through the streets of Compton, greeting fans and reminiscing about their humble beginnings.

“We put it all in the music, all our frustration and anger, our music was like our weapon,” Ice Cube says in the video, which then segues into the red band trailer for the film.

“Straight Outta Compton” follows the formation of legendary rap group N.W.A. in Compton in 1987, and features Ice Cube‘s son O’Shea Jackson Jr. playing a younger version of his father, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre and Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, the three founding members of the group.

The intro footage was shot on Jan. 29, when Knight argued with two men that witnesses told investigators he later deliberately ran over with his truck in a deadly hit-and-run near the set of the shoot.
