Thor Battles The Hulk in New Teaser for ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ (Video)

Cate Blanchett also appears as new villain Hela and Tom Hiddleston is back as Loki

Marvel Studios has released the first teaser for “Thor: Ragnarok,” the third standalone movie about the God of Thunder, played by Chris Hemsworth. In it, he does battle with the villainous Hela (Cate Blanchett), as well as fellow Avenger, The Hulk, in a gladiator showdown.

“Ragnarok” finds Thor imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer, and in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok — the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization — at the hands of Blanchett’s ruthless Hela.

The Hulk appears late in the teaser, when Thor is challenged to survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally.

The film appears to be loaded with offbeat style, courtesy of New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi, who makes to leap to blockbusters following the quirky indie offerings “What We Do in the Shadows” and last year’s “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” In tone, it recalls James Gunn’s loopy “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Joining Hemsworth and Blanchett are Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, “Westword’s” Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban and Anthony Hopkins. Tom Hiddleston also appears in the teaser as Thor’s arch-nemesis, and brother, Loki.

“Thor: Ragnarok” opens into the U.S. on November 3, 2017. First, Marvel opens “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” on May 5.
