Cruise in talks to play Jack Reacher in the Lee Child novel adaptation, which Paramount will co-finance with Skydance Productions

Tom Cruise is in talks to star in and produce "One Shot," based on the bestselling Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child, TheWrap has confirmed.

Christopher McQuarrie wrote and will direct the movie about a former military police major. In "One Shot," Reacher investigates a murder that seems like a slam-dunk but turns out to be more complicated.

There have been 15 Reacher novels, which have sold more than 40 million copies.

David Ellison and Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Gary Levinsohn and Paula Wagner will produce.

Cruise is now filming "Rock of Ages," and  has agreed to star in Universal's sci-fi "Oblivion," an adaptation of Arvid Nelson's graphic novel.
