Melania Trump probably won’t be wearing Tom Ford’s designs anytime soon as the fashion designer-turned-film director thinks his clothes are too expensive for the future first lady.
“They’re too expensive and I don’t mean that in a bad way,” Ford said in an appearance on “The View” Wednesday.
The “Nocturnal Animals” director voted for Hillary Clinton, but said that even if she had won the presidency, she wouldn’t be wearing his clothes because it would make her unrelatable to the general public.
During Ford’s appearance on “The View,” Joy Behar mentioned that we have a new first lady who she thinks is beautiful and would look great in Ford’s clothes — the designer had a slightly different idea though.
“I was asked to dress her quite a few years ago and I declined,” Ford said. “She’s not necessarily my uhhh … image.”
Behar pressed on and mentioned that Michelle Obama wore expensive clothes, to which the designer admitted that he had previously dressed her once when she was visiting Buckingham Palace for dinner with the Queen.
“I thought it was appropriate,” Ford added. “I live in London so that made sense. And it was an honor.”
Ultimately, he said that he would leave it up to Melania on whether or not she should be wearing expensive dresses.
TheWrap reached out to Ford, but he was unavailable for comment.
