Tom Hanks to Star in Wachowski’s ‘Cloud Atlas’ Adaptation

Tom Tykwer is writing and directing the film adaptation of the Davis Mitchell novel with Andy and Lana Wachowski

Tom Hanks is set to star in a new movie written and directed by "The Matrix" trilogy's Andy and Lana Wachowski.

Tom Tykwer, the writer-director of "Perfume" and "Run Lola Run" will write and co-direct with the Wachowskis.

"Cloud Atlas" is based on the bestselling novel by Davis Mitchell.

The Wachowskis and Tykwer will produce with Grant Hill and Steven Arndt under the new label Five Drops.

Philip Lee is executive producer.

Focus Features International is handling foreign sales and distribution and will begin sales in Cannes.

"Cloud Atlas" is in pre-production and will begin filming in September.

The book is, as the Wachowskis like things, complicated.

According to a written statement released by Focus' PR firm, "Cloud Atlas" is "an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution."

The story begins in the 1900s and moves into the future.
