"Clybourne Park," Bruce Norris' prequel-sequel to "A Raisin in the Sun," received the Tony Award for Best Play on Sunday.
The play beat out "Peter and the Starcatcher," which had been racking up awards for the first half of the show, to capture the prize.
It also faced competition from the comedies "Other Desert Cities" and "Venus in Fur."
The Pulitzer Prize-winning play almost didn't make it to Broadway after an eleventh-hour dispute between the playwright and producer Scott Rudin led Rudin to pull out his backing. Jordan Roth, president of Jujamcyn Theaters, stepped in to rescue the run.
"Clybourne Park" revolves around two families — one in the late 1950s and one in 2009 — who own the house at the center of the Lorraine Hansberry classic about the Younger family.
It premiered off-Broadway in 2010 at Playwrights Horizons, immediately drawing rave reviews. Productions opened in London, Chicago, Berkeley and Los Angeles before the play finally made its way to Broadway in April at the Walter Kerr Theater.
