‘True Detective’ Quote or Fortune Cookie? Seth Meyers Mocks HBO Show’s Bad Dialogue (Video)

“A full moon is the best time to ratify alliances” — written by creator Nic Pizzolatto or ancient Chinese mystic?

“True Detective” Season 2 is receiving mixed reviews, at best, and if you’re among those who are cringing at the dialogue every Sunday, Seth Meyers wants you to know you’re not alone.

NBC’s “Late Night” host introduced a new game show Monday called “Fortune Cookie or ‘True Detective’ Quote?” The rules are simple: Determine if an obscure line was uttered by one of the characters on the HBO crime drama, or written on a tiny piece of paper stuffed inside a complimentary dessert served at most Chinese restaurants across the country.

Some of the quotes included “A full moon is the best time to ratify alliances,” “Never do anything out of hunger, not even eating” and “The sun always shines after a downpour.”

Meyers invited three audience members to compete for a sex doll in a bowl of milk, while the other participants each received a half-full bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey.

After two rounds of the clever game, Meyers made the players do a round of shots of the whiskey, and told the contestants to slam it down while thinking of something sad like the “True Detective” characters do.

“Late Night with Seth Meyers” airs weeknights at 12:35 p.m. EST on NBC.
