Donald Trump has successfully viewed the end of the Los Angeles Trader Joe’s standoff — a situation he told Twitter followers he was watching “very closely.”

The standoff ended Saturday evening with one woman dead and the gunman in custody. Before the resolution, and news of the woman’s death, the president took time to inform his followers that he was watching the events unfold.

“Watching Los Angeles possible hostage situation very closely. Active barricaded suspect. L.A.P.D. working with Federal Law Enforcement,” the president tweeted.

But that led some to wonder why the president of the United States was devoting his attention to the Los Angeles story, and telling America about it. Others used the occasion to criticize his policy on issues ranging from gun control to immigration.

“So are you gonna do something about gun control or nah?” wrote one Twitter user.

Another asked, “What about the thousands of immigrant children you held hostage? How’s that working out for you? In November you will see…”

Police told the Los Angeles Times the suspect shot his grandmother and a second woman, then fled. After a police chase, he crashed his car into a light post outside the Trader Joe’s. Police said the suspect opened fire and ran into the store, where the standoff continued until he was taken into custody. One woman inside the store was shot and killed, according to the LAPD. No other details were immediately released.

Here are just a few of the other comments on Trump’s interest in the standoff.
