Madness: No. 16 UMBC Topples No. 1 UVA to Make NCAA Tournament History, Stun Internet

One Twitter user believes “Black Panther’s” Vibranium was involved, others invoke “Teen Wolf” and “Hairspray Live”

Just tear up your brackets now — it’s over. Little UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore Campus) just dropped UVA (University of Virginia), marking the first time a No. 16 seed defeated a No. 1 in the history of the NCAA Tournament.

Up until this point, 16s were 0-135 against 1s. March Madness, indeed.

And the game wasn’t even close: the UMBC Retrievers bested the UVA Cavaliers by 20 points. Yes, this is the same UMBC team that lost to Albany earlier this year 83-39.

As if none of that is dramatic enough for college hoops fans, Virginia wasn’t just a No. 1 seed — of which there are four — they were the top team in the country.

Let that all sink in for a moment. The internet is still trying to do exactly that.
