Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams Headed ‘On the Road’

Oscar-nominated pair join Walter Salles’ adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s classic Beat Generation novel

Oscar nominees Viggo Mortensen and Amy Adams have joined the cast of Walter Salles' adaptation of Jack Kerouac's classic Beat Generation novel "On the Road," their respective publicists have confirmed to TheWrap.

Mortensen will play Old Bull Lee (aka author William S. Burroughs), while Adams will play his wife Jane, an emotionally damaged junkie mother of two children.

Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund and Kirsten Dunst star in the movie, which started filming yesterday.

That's an impressive young cast that has only been made stronger with the addition of Mortensen and Adams, who bring a certain level of prestige to the long-gestating project.

Francis Ford Coppola and Rebecca Yeldham are producing the film, which boasts an adapted screenplay by Oscar nominee Jose Rivera (Salles' "The Motorcycle Diaries").

Adams recently starred in "Leap Year" and will next be seen opposite Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in David O. Russell's "The Fighter," and she recently attached herself to a biopic of singer Janis Joplin that Fernando Meirelles ("City of God") is set to direct.

Mortensen recently starred in "The Road," and he just wrapped his role as Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method."

Mortensen and Adams are represented by WME.
