Former NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez committed suicide in prison on Wednesday morning, the Massachussets Department of Correction said.
The ex-New England Patriots player was discovered hanging in his cell at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts, at approximately 3:05 a.m. He lived by himself in a single cell in a general population unit.
“Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bedsheet that he attached to his cell window,” the statement read. “Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.”
Hernandez’s family has been notified. State police are investigating further.
On April 14, the 27-year-old pro football player was acquitted in Suffolk Superior Court on charges of killing Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in a drive-by shooting in the city’s South End in the early morning hours of July 16, 2012, the Boston Globe reported.
Hernandez is already serving a life sentence for the June 2013 shooting death of Odin Lloyd, for which he was found guilty in April 2015.
