ABC Family Sets ‘Shadowhunters’ Premiere Date

The series will be based on Cassandra Clare’s best-selling YA fantasy book series “The Mortal Instruments”

ABC Family’s new saga series “Shadowhunters” will premiere on Jan. 12 at 9 p.m. ET, the network announced Saturday.

The network will also be airing a preview special, “Beyond the Shadows: The Making of Shadowhunters,” on Dec. 6 at 9:30 p.m. ET.

The series is based on the best-selling YA fantasy book series “The Mortal Instruments” by Cassandra Clare, and follows 18-year-old Clary Fray who finds out on her birthday she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters — human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons.

When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting.

“Shadowhunters” is produced by Constantin Film and executive produced by Ed Decter and McG, who will also direct the first episode. It will star Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray, Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Emeraude Toubia, Matthew Daddario, Isaiah Mustafa and Harry Shum, Jr.

The series will premiere its 13-episode season in early 2016.

“Beyond the Shadows: The Making of Shadowhunters” will give fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse of making the TV show, which will include the cast talking about how they landed their roles and how they got into shape.

The special is produced by Big Door, Inc. and Jen X Productions, Inc., with Jennifer Erwin as executive producer and Max Yoffe as co-executive producers.
