Co-founder Ben Cohen whips up a special limited addition batch of “Bernie’s Yearning,” using a chocolate disc and mint ice cream to represent America’s economic inequality issue
Senator Bernie Sanders is getting some sweet support from ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s.
The Vermont company’s co-founder Ben Cohen is whipping up a special limited addition batch in honor of the state’s very own presidential candidate. While most voters don’t connect the frozen dessert with economic inequality, the Sanders’ supporter is using a chocolate disc and mint ice cream to smash through the issue.
Over the weekend, Cohen announced he was working on the new concoction, telling his Facebook followers: “Spent the weekend making ice cream. Feeling inspired. #FeelTheBern.”
An online mock up of the ice-cream’s packaging says the flavor “includes a graphic description of what’s wrong in our country (in 3D frozen confectionary form).” The special ice cream also promises a “political revolution inside.”
The flavor, called “Bernie’s Yearning,” is described like this:
“The entire top of this pint is covered with a thick disc of solid chocolate. Underneath is plain mint ice cream. The chocolate disc represents the huge majority of economic gains that have gone to the top 1 percent since the end of the recession. Beneath it, the rest of us.”
And here’s how you eat it:
1. Take back of spoon and whack huge chocolate disc into lots of pieces.
2. Let the ice cream soften up a bit, mix the pieces around – and there you have it, Bernie’s Yearning.
3. Dig in, and share it with your fellow Americans!
The carton also features a picture of Sanders’ face with the words “Vermont’s Finest Senator.”
“Open joyfully,” the pint says. “Political revolution inside.” Cohen’s website is careful to say that the flavor was created by Cohen personally, and is not affiliated with the Ben & Jerry’s brand.
The only problem?
You might have a tough time sampling it. The company is only making 40 pints, 25 of which will be donated to the Sanders campaign.
