Bill Simmons Rips ESPN’s ‘Mike & Mike’ Over Softball Rick Pitino Interview

Ex-Grantland boss isn’t exactly light on Louisville men’s basketball head coach either

Bill Simmons destroyed ESPN Radio and TV personalities Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic for what the former Grantland boss perceived as a softball interview this morning with Louisville men’s basketball head coach Rick Pitino.

In the process, the new Ringer headmaster also ripped Pitino as well.

“I hope Rick Pitino can recover from that vicious grilling that Mike and Mike gave him today,” Simmons began his rant on Twitter.

Then the ex-ESPNer tweeted his impression of the “Mike & Mike” hosts carrying Pitino’s water throughout a weak Tuesday Q&A.

One quip was: “Hey Rick, your program used hookers to recruit teenagers and you’re saying you’re not accountable – so, um, who’s winning the tournament?”

Here’s another: “Hey Rick, you’ve had two damaging scandals at Louisville and you refuse to step down – what’s it like to coach against your son?”

The latest Louisville University men’s basketball team blemish comes as several former recruits admitted to attending parties with strippers and prostitutes, and having sex with them. Andre McGee, former Louisville graduate assistant and later director of basketball operations, allegedly bankrolled sexual encounters.

This is not the first time Simmons has publicly beefed with Greenberg and Golic. In late 2014, the ESPN personalities clashed over comments made on each others’ radio shows. Simmons called “Mike & Mike” “absolute garbage” for taking a snippet of his podcast out of context, adding: “I would say I lost respect for that show, but I never had it.”
