Carey Mulligan will play Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's literary classic "The Great Gatsby," reports Deadline.

Apparently, the Oscar-nominated star of "An Education" burst into tears on the red carpet for The Fashion Council Awards upon learning that she had won the highly-coveted role from the director himself.

Mia Farrow played Daisy opposite Robert Redford and Sam Waterston in Jack Clayton's 1974 adaptation.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are expected to star as Jay Gatsby and narrator Nick Carraway, respectively.

Luhrmann has not yet committed to making "The Great Gatsby" his next movie, although it likely will be.

Mulligan is represented by CAA and Julian Belfrage Associates.
