Emma Stone’s ‘Battle of the Sexes’ Sets Awards Season Release

Oscar winner takes on Billie Jean King alongside Steve Carrell as Bobby Riggs

Battle of the Sexes

Emma Stone’s follow-up to her Oscar-winning “La La Land” has set a release date at the beginning of this year’s awards cycle.

Fox Searchlight announced Tuesday a Friday, September 22, release for “Battle of the Sexes,” about the 1973 tennis match between world No. 1 player Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.

The match captivated the world, and began a global conversation about gender parity — and gave weight to the feminist movement permeating America at the time.

Stone plays King, while Steve Carrell plays Riggs.

The Fox Searchlight project is directed by “Little Miss Sunshine” team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, from Simon Beaufoy’s script.

Jessica McNamee, Sarah Silverman, Andrea Riseborough, Elizabeth Shue and Austin Stowell co-star.

Stone won the Best Actress Oscar in February for her performance in Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land,” opposite Ryan Gosling. It was her first Academy Award.
