Golden Globes Marks Huge Comeback for Christian Slater (Video)

The actor won his first award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for his performance on USA’s “Mr. Robot”

The year is off to a good start for Christian Slater, who just won his biggest Hollywood honor since he began his career four decades ago.

The “Mr. Robot” star took home the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a TV Series on Sunday, beating out Alan Cumming (“The Good Wife”), Damian Lewis (“Wolf Hall”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Bloodline”) and Tobias Menzies (“Outlander”).

“I couldn’t be more grateful,” Slater said during his acceptance speech. “Thank you, Hollywood, for letting me do what I love to do for the last four decades.”

Mr. Robot,” a USA Network series about a young computer hacker (Rami Malek) recruited by a mysterious anarchist (Slater), is the actor’s biggest success in years. Although he booked a number of memorable roles in the ’90s, including “True Romance,” “Robin Hood” and “Interview with a Vampire,” his star began to fade in the new millennium after appearing in box office bombs including “Hard Cash,” “Mindhunters” and “Alone in the Dark.”

Slater has made a number of attempts to find a hit TV show over the years, including NBC’s “My Own Worst Enemy,” Fox comedy “Breaking In” and  ABC drama “The Forgotten,” but none made much of an impact on viewers.

Mr. Robot,” however, debuted in 2015 to critical acclaim and ratings success. Season 2 premieres later this year, and will likely provide Slater’s career with an even bigger boost in wake of his first Golden Globe win.
