Good Universe Buys ‘Extinction’ With ‘Muppets’ Producers on Board

Spenser Cohen wrote the sci-fi thriller

Good Universe has acquired “Extinction,” a spec script that the Oscar-nominated Mandeville Films (“The Fighter”) will produce, according to several individuals with knowledge of the deal. Plots details are being kept under wraps, though those close to the project described it as a thriller with science fiction elements and compared it to “Cloverfield.”

Good Universe first acquired the script over the July 4 weekend, but the deal for Mandeville Films did not close until far later.

Spenser Cohen penned the script and Good Universe is now in the hunt for directors. Cohen has had a productive year, selling a pitch to Lakeshore about the U.S. Drone Program and selling his “High Value Target” script to Millennium Films last November.

Mandeville’s David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman will produce alongside their Senior VP Alexander Young and Cohen’s collaborator Anna Halberg. The Oscar-nominated producers just made a sequel to “The Muppets” movie, “Muppets Most Wanted,” due out next March.

Cohen, Halberg, Hoberman and Lieberman are all represented by WME while Cohen and Halberg are also represented by Brooklyn Weaver at Energy Entertaiment and attorney Scott Whitehead.
