Andrea Martin has been added to the cast of NBC’s “Hairspray Live,” the network announced on Thursday.

The two-time Emmy and Tony Award winner will play Prudy Pingleton, Penny Pingleton’s (Ariana Grande) overprotective and often close-minded mother who doesn’t approve of her daughter being best friends with a rebel like Tracy Turnblad (Maddie Baillio).

Martin has received more Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations as a featured actress in a musical than any other actress. She most recently won both awards for the 2013 production of “Pippin.”

For her work on the iconic Canadian-based comedy series “SCTV,” Martin won two Emmy Awards for writing and received an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Variety series.

Her many film credits include “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and its sequel, “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” “Wag the Dog” and “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.” She also appears on Hulu’s “Difficult People” and the upcoming NBC series “Great News.”

“Hairspray Live” will star Baillio as Turnblad, the girl who wants nothing more than to dance on the “Corny Collins Show.”

It also stars Harvey Fierstein, who will re-create his iconic Tony Award-winning role as Edna; Oscar, Golden Globe and SAG Award winner Jennifer Hudson as Maybelle; Emmy and Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth as Velma Von Tussle; Tony and Emmy winner Martin Short as Tracy’s father Wilbur; and Emmy winner Derek Hough as Collins.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron serve as executive producers. Fierstein will also provide a new teleplay and Tony winner Jerry Mitchell will serve as choreographer for the live production with music and lyrics by Tony winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

“Hairspray Live!” will air Dec. 7 at 8/7c on NBC.
