Watch ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ First Trailer From Hulu – It’s Creepier Than You Thought (Video)

Elisabeth Moss is voice for enslaved women in dystopian series

Imagine a world where fertile women are captured and enslaved. The first full trailer for Hulu’s new dystopian series “The Handmaid’s Tale” turns the futuristic premise first devised by author Margaret Atwood’s into a much creepier vision than was shared in previous teaser material.

“I was asleep before,” muses Elisabeth Moss’s character Offred in the new footage. “That’s how we let it happen. When they slaughtered Congress, we didn’t wake up. When they blamed terrorists and suspended the Constitution, we didn’t wake up then either. Now, I’m awake.”

“The Handmaid’s Tale” tells the story of an eerie, misogynistic future, where women are forced to serve as “handmaids” to the men in charge by providing them with children for their barren wives.

Alongside Moss, the show will feature “Orange Is the New Black” star Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel of “Gilmore Girls” fame, and Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski and Joseph Fiennes.

The trailer reveals more insight into the plot of the show than the teaser trailer released in January (you might remember seeing it while you watched the Super Bowl).

“It’s where an extreme regime really rises up and says, ‘we have a better way,’” describes executive producer Warren Littlefield in a behind-the-scenes video by Hulu.

The “extreme regime” uses the threat of terrorism to enact harsher laws and restrict freedoms. That couldn’t possibly happen here, right?
