John Oliver Takes Some of the Blame for Donald Trump’s Presidential Run (Video)

“Last Week Tonight” host pulls up 2013 clip in which he encouraged billionaire to run

John Oliver is willing to shoulder some of the blame for Donald Trump’s Bizarro World candidacy for the U.S. presidency.

“It is frankly hard to believe that there was a time when people thought a Trump candidacy would be funny,” Oliver said on this week’s episode of “Last Week Tonight.” He then played a 2013 clip from his guest hosting duties on “The Daily Show” from a segment saying Trump was weighing a White House run.

“Do it!” Oliver says in the clip. “I will personally write you a campaign check now, on behalf of your country, which does not want you to be president, but badly wants you to run.”

Oliver admits he now has no defense for the remarks, which were meant to be funny but have turned into a dark reality. He then encouraged his viewers to get out and vote, particularly for some of the down ballot races and propositions.

He suggested that people Google “View my ballot” followed by their address, which would provide information on all the ballot measures in their area. And for those thinking that their candidate is sure to win, therefore, they themselves don’t need to vote, Oliver reminded them that nothing is impossible.

He then played another “Daily Show” clip, this time from 2008. Oliver stated at the time that the Chicago Cubs would “never, ever win the World Series.”
