John Oliver tore into Donald Trump after the GOP candidate’s response to the parents of a fallen Muslim-American soldier.
Khizr Khan addressed the Democratic National Convention last week as his wife, Ghazala Khan, stood next to him silently. The couple later drew fire from Trump, who suggested the grieving mother was forbidden to speak at the convention.
“She chose not to speak because she gets too upset when she sees images of her dead son’s face, you f—ing a–hole,” Oliver said.
Oliver also tore into Trump’s suggestion that building his businesses and creating “thousands of jobs” constituted sacrifices he had made for his country.
“No, they are absolutely not,” he said. “They are half-truths from a self-serving half-man who has somehow convinced half the country that sacrifice is the same thing as success.”
Oliver closed the segment, which contrasted the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, with another scathing indictment of the Republican candidate.
“Honestly, the main takeaway from these two weeks is that, incredibly, we may be on the brink of electing such a damaged, sociopathic narcissist, that the simple presidential duty of comforting the families of fallen soldiers may actually be beyond his capabilities, and I genuinely did not think that was a part of the job that someone could be bad at,” he said.
