Johnny Depp Buries Secrets and Bodies in First ‘Black Mass’ Trailer (Video)

Depp plays Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger in the upcoming crime thriller

Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. released the first trailer for the Johnny Depp crime thriller “Black Mass” on Thursday.

Depp stars as real-life Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, who ruled the Boston underworld through fear and intimidation for years before going on the run to avoid an indictment.

In the trailer, Bulger and three associates are sitting around a dinner table. Bulger asks one of the men, John Morris (David Harbour), what the recipe for his steak marinade is. Morris initially refuses, as the recipe is a family secret. After some gentle plying, though, Morris gives it up.

Bulger then turns deadly serious and says “You spilled a secret family recipe today. Maybe you spill a little something about me tomorrow.”

“Black Mass” was directed by Scott Cooper and written by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth. It is based on the book of the same name by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill.

In addition to Depp, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Sienna Miller, and Dakota Johnson.

“Black Mass” is scheduled for release September 18.
