‘Only Lovers Left Alive,’ Jim Jarmusch’s Vampire Tale, Tops Specialty Box Office

R-rated drama averages $24,250 on four screens. Nicolas Cage’s “Joe” starts slowly, “Dom Hemingway” sputters in expansion

Writer-director Jim Jarmusch‘s vampire tale “Only Lovers Left Alive” topped the specialty box office, taking in $97,000 from just four theaters in its opening weekend.

That’s a nifty $24,250 per-theater average for Sony Pictures Classic’s R-rated drama, which stars Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as an undead couple. Mia Wasikowska co-stars in the film, which SPC plans to expand next weekend.

The Weinstein Company’s “The Railway Man,” an R-rated drama starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth, debuted with $64,506 from four theaters, a $16,127 per-theater-average. Jonathan Teplitzky directed the saga of a traumatized World War II veteran who confronts one of his captors with the help of his wife.

Nicolas Cage’s well-reviewed “Joe” got off to a slow start, taking in $106,380 from 48 theaters.

That’s a so-so $2,216 per-theater average for the R-rated Roadside Attractions drama, which stars Cage as an ex-con who becomes an unlikely mentor for a 15-year-old boy. It has a strong 83 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Under the Skin,” which stars Scarlett Johansson as a man-eating alien in Scotland, went from four to 50 theaters and took in $309,248. That’s a solid $5,727 per-screen average for the Jonathan Glazer-directed thriller from A24.

Fox Searchlight expanded “Dom Hemingway,” starring Jude Law, from four to 42 theaters, but it didn’t connect. The R-rated black comedy, written and directed by Richard Shepard, brought in $70,000 for a weak $1,667 per-theater average.

“Cuban Fury,” Entertainment One’s romantic dance comedy, opened in 79 theaters and six markets and brought in $55,466. That’s a soft $702 per screen for the film, which is directed by James Griffiths (“Up All Night”) and written by Jon Brown, based on an original idea by Nick Frost. He stars along with Rashida Jones, Chris O’Dowd and Ian McShane.
