Matthew McConaughey Talks Down Tree-Hugging in Lincoln Hybrid Commercials (Video)

Oscar-winning actor once again drives under the influence of bizarre script writing, this time at the wheel of a hybrid

Matthew McConaughey is back and waxing poetic again in a pair of new Lincoln commercials slated for air beginning Jan. 1, 2015. This is the second series of commercials the Oscar-winning actor has done for the automobile company, having gained attention for the weird tone and meandering monologues of the first run.

This time, the now bearded “Interstellar” star is promoting the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. And while his monologue is slightly more lucid, his words are still eerily reminiscent of the philosophical musings of his character on HBO’s “True Detective.”

“It’s not about hugging trees. It’s not about being wasteful either. You’ve just gotta find that balance,” he says in the latest ad. “Where taking care of yourself takes care of more than just yourself. That’s the sweet spot.”

It’s a statement on the notion of driving a hybrid without giving up all the luxuries of a standard vehicle. The second commercial, though, goes full McConaughey.

The 15-second spot features a shot of the car parked in the rain as McConaughey sits at a table behind a nearby window. The camera cuts inside as the rain stops to capture him looking upward and smiling. No words. No shots of the car in action. No weird musings or standoffs with cattle, as we saw in the first batch of commercials.

Just quiet contemplation and an appreciation of a rain shower’s end. It doesn’t need words to be memorable … or totally f&@$ing weird.
