"Mr. Nice" star Rhys Ifans will play the villain in Columbia's "Spider-Man," the studio announced on Monday.

The filmmakers prefer not to reveal which character Ifans will be playing.

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone star as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, respectively.

Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin are producing the franchise reboot, which begins production in December. The film will hit theaters in 3D on July 3, 2012.

Ifans was last seen in "Greenberg" and "Nanny McPhee Returns." He next appears in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1," and also stars in Columbia's  "Anonymous," a thriller about the real author behind William Shakespeare's works, which comes from unlikely director Roland Emmerich.

Ifans is represented by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment and London's Independent Talent Group.
