New ‘Avengers’ Clip Reveals Why Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark Created Ultron (Video)

The highly-anticipated sequel opens in theaters May 1

Marvel released a new clip from the upcoming “Avengers: Age of Ultron” that delves into the reason Tony Stark created what eventually becomes the team’s newest antagonist, Ultron.

“There’s part of [Stark] that’s still an engineer who just kind of wants to help them all do things a little bit better,” Robert Downey Jr., who plays Stark/Iron Man, said in the clip.

“Tony starts to realize ‘I don’t have to be in the suit the whole time,’” “Ultron” producer and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige explains in the clip. ‘”And in fact it may be more efficient if I’m not.’”

Thus, Stark designed Ultron, a super-advanced robot with artificial intelligence. Though he was created to protect humanity, Ultron ultimately decides that humans are a problem to eliminated rather than protected.

“He thinks he’s doing the logical robot thing,” director Joss Whedon said. “But he’s full of rage.”

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” opens in theaters on May 1.
