Regis Philbin Exposes Surprising Role in CBS’ ‘Odd Couple’ Reboot (Video)

A huge fan of the original film, Philbin tells David Letterman he was disappointed he wasn’t invited to play one of the leads

Regis Philbin is a huge fan of the original film starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, while David Letterman prefers the television version of “The Odd Couple,” with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. So when Philbin got an offer to be a part of CBS’s reboot, he was pretty excited.

“When I got out there, I learned I wasn’t gonna play Jack Lemmon … not even Walter Matthau,” Philbin said on Wednesday night’s “The Late Show.” “I’m playing a guy who stays in the subway; you see him once in a while. And he’s a flasher.”

Philbin couldn’t even get out this last sentence without first cracking a smile.

“You should have seen the way Regis handled this,” Philbin said, which made Letterman very nervous when he began to stand up. Apparently, though, Philbin forgot one key component of being an effective “flasher.”

The latest take on “The Odd Couple” stars Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon and premieres on CBS in 2015. “Late Show with David Letterman” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS.
