Rio Olympics boxer Hassan Saada has been arrested following accusations he sexually assaulted two female waitresses in the Olympic village.
Saada, a light heavyweight from Morocco, was taken into custody by Brazilian authorities on Friday after he was accused of assaulting the women in an incident on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. Under Brazilian law, he can be held for up to 15 days as authorities investigate.
Saada was due to fight in the preliminary rounds of the boxing competition on Saturday against Mehmet Nadir from Turkey.
There have been numerous questions raised about Brazil’s readiness to host the Summer Games, including fears over Zika virus, sanitation and security.
Legendary sportscaster Bob Costas spoke about the much-publicized issues during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour on Tuesday.
“There are serious issues and that will be a story at the end of this: if [Rio] can surmount those issues and pull of a successful games,” Costas said. He also acknowledged that discussing things like Zika will be inevitable.
“It’s going to be impossible not to address some of the issues, because they will directly intersect with the competition,” he said, specifically mentioning the condition of the water for the swimming and other water-based events.
