Sean Spicer Admits ‘Mistakes’ as White House Press Secretary, Says He Never Lied

“Where there were mistakes that were made that I got something wrong, I think I’ve owned that,” Spicer tells ABC News

Sean Spicer followed his surprise Emmy appearance on Sunday with an interview Thursday on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” admitting he said he made “mistakes” as White House Press Secretary.

“I made mistakes,” Spicer told Paula Faris. “There’s no question. I think we all do.”

Spicer called the “personal attacks” on his integrity “over the top.”  Asked if he thought he ever lied to the American people, he said, “I don’t think so.”

When Faris pressed, he said that he has “not knowingly done anything to… do that.”

Spicer also addressed his first appearance in the White House press briefing room, when he argued that the crowd sizes at Trump’s inauguration were the largest ever — a misstatement that became fodder for his joking appearance at the Emmys.

“I think it might’ve been better to be a lot more specific with what we were talking about in terms of the universe, not focus so much on photographic evidence, et cetera,” he said. “I could’ve probably had more facts at hand and been more articulate in describing … the entirety of what that day was about.”

“I would definitely say that I wish we had been more consistent from the beginning in terms of the terms that we would use and the goals that we were trying to achieve,” Spicer said.

Spicer said President Trump was supportive of his Emmys cameo (despite Trump’s calling out the awards show on Tuesday for its “worst ever” ratings).

“He thought I did a great job. … It was very reassuring,” Spicer said, adding that he feels “very good with my image. I’m very happy with myself.”

While Spicer said he’s “having fun,” he also thinks he there are things to “correct.”

“I did that. Where there were mistakes that were made that I got something wrong, I think I’ve owned that,” he said.
