Showtime will develop a limited series that traces the buildup to the Cuban Missile Crisis, TheWrap has learned.

The four-hour limited series is based on the book “The Armageddon Letters” by James Blight and Janet M. Lang. It is based on 43 actual documents released under the Freedom of Information Act.

These documents chronicled the buildup to the Cuban Missile Crisis when the world teetered on the edge of total nuclear destruction. The story is of three leaders — President Kennedy, Nikita Khrushchev and Fidel Castro — who built a war machine they almost couldn’t turn off.

Two-time Oscar winner Albert S. Ruddy (“The Godfather,” “Million Dollar Baby”), Oscar nominee Mike Medavoy (“Black Swan,” “Shutter Island”), Benjamin Anderson and Todd Martens will executive produce, along with Alexandra Ruddy for Ruddy Productions. Phil Alden Robinson (“Field of Dreams,” “The Sum of All Fears”) will write and direct the limited series.

Recently, Showtime renewed its freshman drama “Billions” for a second season. The show stars Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis as a U.S. Attorney and hedge fund king, respectively, who find themselves going head to head. That series is set to air its first season finale on Sunday.
