‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Teaser Reveals John Boyega Wielding Lightsaber (Video)

Latest installment of sci-fi franchise set for release in December

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” released a new brief teaser on its Instagram page, showing John Boyega‘s character wielding a lightsaber.

The new promo featured some previously seen footage, before dropping the bombshell shot of Boyega’s character holding up the weapon of choice of Jedis and Siths, in apparent preparation to battle Kylo Ren, the baddie played by Adam Driver.

Boyega’s character, Finn, is seen wielding a blue lightsaber, which firmly puts him on the side of the good guys, battling the dark side, who use red sabers.

However, director JJ Abrams threw a wrench into the traditional good vs. evil model that fans are expecting.

“Kylo Ren is not a Sith,” Abrams told Empire magazine earlier this week.

Abrams also previously teased Ren’s mask is “meant to be a nod to the Vader mask,” and that he “came to the name Kylo Ren when he joined a group called the Knights of Ren.”

Boyega’s Finn, meanwhile, remains more mysterious, though it’s probably safe to assume based on the footage so far that he teams up with Daisy Ridley‘s character Rey for the majority of the story.

The film is the seventh installment in the “Star Wars” franchise and also brings back Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, reprising their roles as Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker, respectively. Newcomers to the franchise include Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow.

Disney is releasing the seventh episode in the blockbuster franchise on Dec. 18.
