Stephen Colbert Hammers John Kasich on Not Legalizing Pot

“We don’t want to tell our kids, ‘Don’t do drugs — but, by the way, this drug’s OK,'” GOP candidate tells “Late Show” host

“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert took Republican presidential contender John Kasich to task Friday night over the Ohio governor’s opposition to legalizing marijuana, greeting him with a series of serious questions on the subject.

“We don’t want to tell our kids, ‘Don’t do drugs — but, by the way, this drug’s OK,’” Kasich said.

Colbert responded, “Isn’t that what alcohol is?” drawing cheers from the audience.

Colbert then asked Kasich whether he had ever smoked pot, to which the governor replied that he had.

“If you had ever been caught smoking marijuana and had it on your record, would you be the governor of Ohio right now?”

When Kasich joked, “Maybe if I had you campaigning for me,” Colbert was having none of it, and continued with more tough questions.

Voters in Kasich’s home state of Ohio shot down a ballot initiative Tuesday that would have legalized marijuana there. Kasich had campaigned against the measure.
