The blockbuster hip-hop musical “Hamilton” dominated the Tony Awards on Sunday, earning a total of 11 awards, including Best Musical.

The show’s creator and star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, won for his book and score but ceded the Best Actor in a Musical prize to his co-star, Leslie Odom Jr., who plays Aaron Burr in the musical about founding father Alexander Hamilton.

“Hamilton” director Thomas Kail and  featured performers Daveed Diggs and Renee Elise Goldsberry were also recognized during the annual broadcast honoring achievement on Broadway.

Despite its record 16 nominations, “Hamilton” fell short of the milestone of 12 Tony Awards set by Mel Brooks‘ musical “The Producers” in 2001.

On the non-musical side, Stephen Karam’s drama “The Humans” won four awards, including for Best Play, scenic design and supporting performers Reed Birney and Jayne Houdyshell.

In addition, Jessica Lange earned her first Tony for the Eugene O’Neill revival “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” and is just a Grammy short of a coveted EGOT. Frank Langella won his fourth Tony for Best Actor in a Play for “The Father.”

Tony-winning host James Corden opened the show, broadcast live from New York City’s Beacon Theatre, with a tribute to the victims of the massacre that killed 50 people at an Orlando gay nightclub early Sunday morning.

“Hate will never win,” Corden said. “Theater is a place where every race, creed, sexuality and gender is equal, is embraced and is loved.”
