‘Transparent,’ ‘The Imitation Game,’ ‘Dear White People’ Among GLAAD Media Award Nominees

52 comedy series and 83 drama series with regular portrayal of LGBT characters were considered this year, as opposed to 2005, when GLAAD could only find eight comedy series and 17 drama series

Amazon Studios’ Golden Globe winner “Transparent” joins Oscar nominee “The Imitation Game” and indie comedy “Dear White People” as nominees for the 26th annual GLAAD Media Awards announced on Wednesday.

Other nominees in the film and television categories include ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” “Looking” and “The Normal Heart,” while “Pride,” a Golden Globe nominated movie, is also nominated with John Lithgow and Alfred Molina drama “Love Is Strange.”

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor all forms of media, including print, blogs and even a video game this year, for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives.

The ceremonies held in Los Angeles on March 21 and New York on May 9 also serve as a fundraiser for the organization that supports the LGBT community and issues that build support for equality.

In response to the LGBT community’s growing representation on television, GLAAD expanded the Outstanding Comedy Series and Drama Series categories from five nominees to a maximum of 10 nominees each.

This year, a pool of shows with regular LGBT characters considered for nomination included 52 comedy series and 83 drama series. In 2005, the pool was significantly smaller, with only eight comedy series and 17 dramas considered.

ABC had the most nominations of any broadcast network with six, while HBO’s five nominations made it the leading cable network.

“For nearly 30 years, the GLAAD Media Awards have raised the bar for inclusion in news and entertainment, transforming LGBT representation in media and moving the dial for acceptance across the globe,” said GLAAD president & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “It’s been a remarkable year for equality, and nowhere is that more evident than in the visibility LGBT people have gained across media. This year’s nominees, including expanded categories in Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series, reflect the widening diversity of LGBT images and storylines that are closing the gap to full acceptance.”
