‘Waitress’ Musical With Score by Sara Bareilles to Open on Broadway

Adaptation of 2007 movie starring Keri Russell sets April 2016 premiere

A musical adaptation of the 2007 indie movie “Waitress” will open on Broadway this spring, producers Barry and Fran Weissler announced Thursday.

The stage show, with a book by Jessie Nelson and a score by five-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, is scheduled to begin previews in March before an opening in April at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

The production, directed by Tony winner Diane Paulus (“Pippin,” “Finding Neverland”), is currently playing through Sept. 27 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Written by the late Adrienne Shelly, the film starred Keri Russell as a waitress and expert pie maker stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. When a baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at escape, she must weigh her commitments against a rare shot at freedom and recognition.

Casting will be announced at a later date.

“Waitress” will be produced on Broadway by Barry and Weissler, as well as Norton and Elayne Herrick.
