Three Al Jazeera journalists marked their one-year anniversary in an Egyptian prison Monday.
Baher Mohamed, Mohamed Fahmy, and Peter Greste were jailed on Dec. 29th, 2013 in Cairo for allegedly aiding and abetting the Muslim Brotherhood.
They were convicted in June of this year; Greste and Fahmy were sentenced to seven years in prison while Mohamed received a 10-year sentence after being convicted of second charge.
The journalists were imprisoned on charges of spreading false news, conspiring with the Muslim Brotherhood, and endangering national security.
Journalists and news organizations around the world have shown support for the jailed journalists throughout the year, with the #FreeAJStaff hashtag becoming a viral sensation online and on TV.
This coming Thursday, an appeal hearing will be held in Egypt’s Court of Cassation. Lawyers for the journalists will argue the process behind the original trial was flawed. The court has the option of dismissing the entire case, keeping the sentences in tact, or calling for a new trial.
