When MTV’s 28th annual Video Music Awards get underway Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, Maroon 5 frontman and star of “The Voice” Adam Levine, won’t be in the house. And he most likely won’t be tuning in, either.

This weekend, Levine had harsh words for the awards show and the networks that host them, calling the event the “one day a year when MTV pretends to still care about music.”

“I’m drawing a line in the sand,” he tweeted on Saturday. “F- you VMAs.”

MTV took the harsh words in stride, inviting him via Twitter to tune in and tweet a pic of his 2004 award. But Levine wasn’t having any of it.

“Still waiting to have my ‘Jerry Maguire’ mission statement moment of deep regret … not happening,” he tweeted.

“I may be a pop singer, but every once in a while the angsty teenager in me just blurts out some honesty. It’s a reflex.”

Lady Gaga, Beyonce and the cast of “The Jersey Shore” will, however, be at the Nokia Theater in L.A. for the VMAs. Tony Bennett will pay tribute to the late Amy Winehouse at the event, which will feature a black, rather than a red carpet.

What’s more MTV president Stephen Friedman promised to TheWrap last week that Gaga’s performance “ is going to be unlike anything she has ever done.”
