Senator Al Franken Continues Apology Tour: ‘I Just Want to Again Say I Am Sorry’

“I know there are no magic words that I can say to regain your trust and I know that’s going to take time,” says Al Franken

Senator Al Franken (D-Minnesota) held an emotional press conference on Monday, where he again offered his apologies unreservedly to women who have come forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct this month.

“I just want to again say I am sorry,” he said. “I know there are no magic words that I can say to regain your trust and I know that’s going to take time. I am ready to start that process.”

As he has in the past, Franken reiterated his contrition to the media.

“I know that I’ve let a lot of people down, people of Minnesota, my colleagues, my staff, my supporters, and everyone who has counted on me to be a champion for women,” he said.

Franken took a few questions from reporters, but didn’t break new ground. He said he could not rule out the possibility of new allegations in the coming days, since he could not remember everyone in his career whom he may or may not have made feel uncomfortable.

His case will move internally to a secretive and lengthy hearing before the Senate Ethics Committee. Franken has promised his full cooperation with the panel.
