Amazon Studios is adapting Jay McInerney’s “Brightness Falls” book trilogy into a television series, a source close to the streaming service has confirmed.
The trilogy follows a couple — Corrine and Russell Calloway — over the course of 30 years. Each novel is set against the backdrop of a major historical event. The first one, “Brightness Falls” sees the two meeting in college and getting caught up in the buyout frenzy of the ’80s. The second, “The Good Life,” takes place in the shadow of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The third, “Bright Precious Days” is during the 2008 recession.
Throughout the couple’s life, events test their strength, whether it’s the drama and romance of New York finance and publishing, or the moments that defined the city. They also have to work against outside influences such as other lovers.
McInerney and The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jeremy Bell will serve as executive producers. Novelists Dana Vachon and Gemma Sieff will adapt the books and executive produce. Burr Steers (“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”) is attached to direct, and will also executive produce.
This isn’t the first adaptation of the author’s work. His first novel, “Bright Lights, Big City,” was made into a 1988 drama film starring the incredibly ’80s cast of Michael J. Fox, Kiefer Sutherland, Phoebe Cates, Dianne Wiest and Jason Robards.
No other details of the latest adaptation have been announced.
