‘American Housewife’ Star Katy Mixon Says Role Was ‘Divine Appointment’ (Video)

“It immediately spoke to me,” actress tells TheWrap

Katy Mixon spent six years stealing the screen in supporting roles on CBS’s “Mike & Molly” and HBO’s “Eastbound & Down,” and now ABC’s “American Housewife” is the first show to embrace her as a lead.

“It has just been amazingly overwhelming,” the actress told TheWrap about the response to her performance as the acerbic-yet-loving suburban mom Katie Otto.

“As an actor, you always want to jump into something that you believe in, but with no expectations,” she said. “You always hope that people receive it well and dig it. So it’s been an incredible experience to know that people love it.”

“It is just quite spectacular to be part of something that reaches so many people,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what gender you are or what background you come from, everyone can relate to feeling insecure.”

The role spoke to her from the moment she read it, Mixon said. She immediately knew she had to play the role, describing her casting a “divine appointment.”

“She’s a firecracker, she’s fearless. She says it all wrong, she gets it all wrong,” Mixon said. “But there’s a huge arc, and there’s a turning point in each episode,” she added.
