Singer will attempt to shed some pounds when weight-loss show returns in October

Ruben Studdard won big on the second season of "American Idol." Now he's hoping to lose big on another television venture.

The 34-year-old singer, who bears the nickname The Velvet Teddy Bear, has struggled with his weight throughout the years, though in 2006 Studdard dropped almost 100 pounds after seeking help from a weight-management center and becoming a vegetarian.

Studdard's most recent album, "Letters From Birmingham," was released in March 2012.
