Simon Cowell noted during Tuesday’s “America’s Got Talent” that a choir has never won the NBC competition before, while also deciding that the Detroit Youth Choir — which received a golden buzzer from a tearful Terry Crews that night — might just be the first to claim victory.
After performing their own remixed version of “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, the kids had that coveted golden confetti rain down on them, thanks to “AGT” host Crews, a Michigan native who just couldn’t help himself from jumping behind the judges’ table to tap that button.
“Wait, wait, I’m so sorry to interrupt you Howie [Mandel], but I have to tell you that every young woman and man on this stage represents me, and where I came from,” Crews said, cutting in as the judges were deliberating after the choir’s performance. “I remember sitting at my window in Flint, Michigan, dreaming and wanting to make it and wanting to be here. And they’re here, and they did so well that I have to do this.”
Crews then walked down from the stage and came up behind Cowell, Mandel, Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough, ready to make the Detroit Youth Choir’s dreams come true.
“Let me tell you something Mr. White,” he said, referencing the choir director, “all it takes is one person to believe in a young man or woman for them to reach their dreams, and you are that man, sir.” Then he hit the golden buzzer and the tears started flowing.
