Andrew Gumpert New Biz & Operations Boss for Columbia

Strategic opportunities and new business models are in the air as former president of business affairs & administration takes over

Andrew Gumpert has been promoted to president, Worldwide Business Affairs and Operations of Columbia Pictures, the studio announced Tuesday.

Apparently, he’s looking to make some changes.

“As we bring new films of all genres and sizes to the marketplace, we are taking a new analytical approach to our deal-making rather than predicating our deals on past business models that are no longer sustainable,” said Gumpert in a statement Tuesday.

President of Business Affairs & Administration for Columbia since 2008, Gumpert came to Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2005 after several years running business and legal affairs for Miramax.

“Andrew has provided the kind of forward-thinking leadership that makes him one of the best and brightest business minds and negotiators in our industry,” Michael Lynton, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Amy Pascal, co-chairman said Tuesday. “With this promotion, Andrew will play an even more critical role in identifying and implementing new strategic opportunities for our theatrical business.”

Theatrical business has been pretty good for Columbia this year with a healthy slate of films such as “The Karate Kid,” “The Other Guys,” Julia Roberts’ “Eat Pray Love” and “The Social Network.” In time to end the year on a widely assumed high note, the studio has the Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie team-up “The Tourist” coming out Dec. 10.

Gumpert takes up his new job immediately.
